What a different place Ambleside is now. It really is a 365, 7 day a week destination. Everything is ten fold from the choice of places to eat and drink to the shops and standard of accommodation and it is continuing to rise. From cosy pubs to exceedingly delicious cafes through to 3 AA Rosette restaurants, Ambleside has it all perfectly matching high class fells with high class food.

From B&B’s to the larger hotels it seems most have undergone extensive refurbishment in recent years really pushing up the standard of accommodation in Ambleside.

As the hospitality has grown, so has the choice of ways to get about, explore and travel around the Southern Lake District. The Ambleside to Langdale cycle path is proving one of the most popular. Previously a very busy route for those staying in either locations to get and explore each other. Busy roads creating a less than ideal route to cycle even for harden cyclists. For anyone with children, a no go. Now the route has off road sections enabling cycling for all. A scenic 16 mile route starting Rothay Park in Ambleside goes through to the beautiful Langdale Valley. Along the way is Elterwater where many just turn around and return to Ambleside.

The GoLakes Travel programme who along with the Lake District National Park have been instrumental in creating this and promoting it along with the bike boat service. The bike boat service from Brockhole runs throughout the spring and summer taking cyclists and their bikes across Lake Windermere to the western side where cycle routes can be accessed for Hawkshead, Sawrey and Coniston.

Information and ideas on lot of the cycle paths in the Southern Lake District as well as car free travel alternatives can be found on the GoLakes Travel website https://www.golakes.co.uk/travel/
