Delightful Damsons Celebrated this April in Cumbria
After the disappoint of the 2o16 Damson Day Fair being cancelled due to a waterlogged field and car parking area, it’s looking a firm yes, that the 2017 fair is to go ahead. The weather is looking like it is going to continue to behave itself after what can only be described as an absolutely terrible run up to the scheduled 2016 fair with the devastating floods of December 2015 and continuing wet weather into early 2016.
This annual far takes place in the stunning Lyth Valley at Low Farm in the heart of the area. Although the damson fruit is an autumn bloomer, it I now damson blossom season where the valley is covered in white flowers as far as the eye can see. It is a very special time of the year and so rightly so, should be celebrated.
Saturday April 22nd from 10.30am until 4.30am there will be lots of activities, shows, entertainment such as live music, archery and even some Morris dancing, competitions and above all, an abundance of local food. Everything from pies to jams to chutneys, beer and puddings will have a distinctly purple fruit theme too you’ll be surprised to learn!
Along with the many trade stands there will also be refreshments provided by Friends of Crosthwaite School including freshly made crepes with a range of fillings (including damson coulis and cream) and to wet the whistle, decadent Damson Royales. All proceeds from the FrOCS stalls will help our local school provide an even more amazing education!
Damson Day is a country fair held in celebration of the arrival of spring and the Damson blossom in the Lyth Valley. A fun-filled family day out packed with local crafts, local produce and entertainment.
Hawkshead Brewery will be there for beer refreshments from their serving a number of beers with a special note to the Damson Stout along with Lakeland Gold, Bitter and Lakeland Lager.
Nearby accommodation can be found in the form of the Damson Dene Hotel. The Lyth Valley is located between Kendal and Bowness making it easily accessible and with plenty to see and do to make a weekend out of it.
